Brooklyn Artist Loft

Brooklyn, New York
2011

This dramatic conversion of a light manufacturing warehouse to an artist live/work loft studio juxtaposes the gritty, industrial character of the building exterior with warm, expansive interior spaces flooded by natural light.
A retractable translucent wall divides the living and working areas. When closed, its translucency directs filtered light from the linear skylight and northern exposure rear facade towards the library and studio areas. A large sloped skylight acts as a space definer between the live and work areas and a white steel and glass staircase connects the lower level with sleeping rooms and a large roof deck occupying the floor above.

River House

Coxsackie, New York
2008-2012

BWA was asked to design a modern residence on a 90-acre farm in upstate New York, one that would feel connected to the landscape, and reflect the latest in green technology.

The two materials employed are sleek, but subtle: a natural wood skin for the interior, and a dark cement board for the exterior, with various points of visible contrast. The house is adjacent to the Hudson River, a spectacular view of which greets the visitor upon entering the house. Geothermal wells around the site, and photovoltaic solar panels on the roof ensure a clean and efficient energy flow.

West Village Townhouse 2

NYC, New York
2012

Drawing from its historic Greenwich Village context, this extensive reconstruction of a 1840s townhouse fuses past and present into a new, sophisticated 4,000 square foot home. The project is also the first townhouse in Greenwich Village to earn a LEED for Homes Gold rating.

Striking a balance between historic and modern guides all aspects of design in this reinvigorated Greek Revival townhouse. Steel and glass windows line the basement and parlor floors’ South facades, drawing in natural light and air from the garden. Read more…

Ecclissi Jewelry

NYC, New York
2007

A maker of sleek, contemporary jewelry wanted a combination office and showroom in a midtown loft.  Open, moveable partitions provide flexible workspace.  A minimal, high contrast palette of white and brown heightens the playful interaction of line and form. The two primary materials, gypsum and walnut, are employed against expectation.  The walls curve and bend.  Wood drapes over the tops of partitions.  Walnut elements reveal the sinuous flow of form throughout the space.  The continuous oak floor anchors the movement. The interior design expands the counterpoint of line and form.  Rounded light fixtures contrast with rectangular work surfaces and partitions.  Furnishings contain both straight and curving lines.  The solid white plane of the Conference Table is tethered to the room by walnut restraints and was specially designed by BWArchitects for the client. The creative deployment of simple yet elegant materials achieves a high level of design within the standard commercial limitations of budget and time.

East Hampton Artist Studio

Easthampton, New york
2007

This light-filled artist studio is conceived as a simple rectangular box which rests lightly on a 1.5 acre East Hampton site. Lifted off the ground by concrete piers, the building allows the natural contours of the land to continue below it. In some places, the siteʼs natural slope reveals the studioʼs cast-in-place concrete walls. The exterior walls, clad in a natural cedar siding, are punctuated by clerestory windows that wash the studioʼs large interior space with a diffused northern light. A zinc-coated metal roof wraps around the southern end of the rectangular structure, shielding it from direct sunlight. When daylight begins to fade, inside activity is revealed as the interior begins to glow, and gently illuminate the surrounding landscape.

New England Estate

Topsfield, Massachusetts
2004

For the renovation and expansion of this 14,000 square foot turn-of-the-century New England home, BWA wanted to capture the spirit of the rich and dynamic architectural dialogue happening across the Atlantic during the period, notably in the work of Edwin Lutyens, and McKim, Mead & White. With a mixture of stone, cedar and slate, as well as a high degree of craftsmanship, the exterior of the house has touches of classic English and American style, while the interior is open and modern in its layout.

New England Lake House

Exeter, Rhode Island
2003

To design this Rhode Island residence, BWA was selected after a competition process with four other firms. The property is situated on a 400 acre-plot, between a patch of forest, and the scenic James Pond, and the modern, single-story, fan-shaped house was designed with this landscape in mind. The shaded stone entry stands in complete contrast to the rear of the house, which is made largely of red cedar and glass, and curves along the shoreline, emphasizing the view and maximizing the natural light. The house is built from natural and locally-sourced materials, and is heated entirely through geothermal wells on-site.
